One claim of up to $2,000 per person can be made every 5 years. Batteries, repairs, ear mold replacements, and loss or damage replacement costs are not eligible. If you have private insurance that covers hearing aids, it pays first and the amount is deducted from the $2,000 maximum.

A Manitoba Health ancillary program that provides prosthetic and orthotic devices and services to eligible Manitoba residents. Covered items include limb prosthetic devices and services, and limb and spinal orthotic devices and services. No deductible is required. One device every two years can generally be claimed unless there has been a medically diagnosed change.

BC Medical Equipment and Devices

This is not a universal BC equipment program. Eligibility is tied to BC income assistance and disability assistance (the Employment and Assistance Regulation and the Employment and Assistance for Persons with Disabilities Regulation). The ministry may provide the least expensive, appropriate medical equipment and devices to eligible recipients when there is a medically essential need and no other resources available to pay for the item. Covered items include canes, crutches, walkers, manual and power wheelchairs, wheelchair seating systems, scooters, toileting, transfer and positioning aids, hospital beds and related items, pressure-relief mattresses, and floor or ceiling lifts. Separate but related health-supplement policies also cover breathing devices (such as positive airway pressure devices and nebulizers), hearing instruments (hearing aids, repairs, and related items for eligible recipients, including children under 19 in families eligible for MSP supplementary benefits), and orthoses (custom foot orthotics, orthopaedic footwear, and ankle, knee, hip, upper-extremity, torso, and cranial braces). The ministry must approve requests before purchase, and a prescription or assessment from a qualified health professional is generally required. Items purchased without prior approval are not normally reimbursed, except in life-threatening emergencies.

AccessAbility Supports

AccessAbility Supports (formerly the Disability Support Program) is a Prince Edward Island program that helps Islanders with physical, intellectual, neurological, sensory, or mental disabilities who experience substantial impairment in their activities of daily living. Support is provided in five areas: Personal Supports, Housing Supports, Community Supports, Caregiver Supports, and Financial Supports. Under Personal Supports, this can include technical aids and assistive devices such as a wheelchair, along with life-skills training, in-home supports, and specialized care. The program's technical aids and assistive devices policy covers categories such as bathroom aids, bedroom aids, household aids, communication devices, feeding equipment and supplies, hearing aids, orthotic devices, prosthetic devices, visual aids, wheelchairs, and positioning and ambulatory aids. Housing Supports include vehicle and home modification funding, and Financial Supports can include Assured Income for basic needs.

RAMQ — Devices That Compensate for a Physical Deficiency

Quebec's RAMQ program covers the purchase, replacement, and repair of technical aids that compensate for a physical (motor) deficiency, such as orthoses, prostheses, walking aids, manual and powered wheelchairs, posture assists, and standing aids. Eligible residents with a valid Health Insurance Card may receive covered devices through authorized facilities or laboratories.

New Brunswick's Mobility and Adaptive Equipment Loan Program loans mobility and adaptive equipment to eligible clients at no cost, including items such as wheelchairs, walkers, canes, and bathroom safety aids. Equipment may be loaned through the Recycling Program jointly administered with Easter Seals NB, or purchased new when recycled equipment is not available.

Saskatchewan Aids to Independent Living

The Saskatchewan Aids to Independent Living (SAIL) program provides benefits that help people with physical disabilities live more independently and manage certain chronic health conditions. It is made up of multiple sub-programs covering equipment, supplies, and services such as mobility devices, oxygen, and ostomy supplies, some of which are universal and others income-tested.

Alberta Aids to Daily Living

Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) helps Albertans with a long-term disability, chronic illness, or terminal illness pay for basic medical equipment and supplies they need to live independently, such as wheelchairs, walkers, hearing aids, and other assistive devices. The program covers part of the cost, with clients paying a portion based on their income.

Nunavut's Income Assistance Program provides financial help to residents 18 and older in financial need, covering basic needs such as food, shelter, and clothing. It includes enhanced support for people with disabilities and seniors, with people 60 and older exempt from the work requirement.

Workers' Compensation Benefits

Workers' compensation can provide income replacement, medical treatment, rehabilitation, and other supports after a work-related injury or occupational illness. Canada does not have one single national workers' compensation benefit — each province and territory runs its own workers' compensation board or commission, with its own rules, eligibility, claim process, payment rates, and appeal steps. Newfoundland and Labrador Disability Benefit

The Newfoundland and Labrador Disability Benefit (NLDB) is a provincial program providing monthly financial support of up to $400 ($4,800 annually) to low-to-moderate income residents with disabilities. The benefit amount is determined by adjusted family net income, with full benefits provided to those with incomes below $29,402 and partial benefits available up to specific thresholds ($42,404 for individuals; up to $55,404 for couples where both qualify).

Canada Disability Benefit

The Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) is a federal monthly benefit providing direct financial support to low- and modest-income working-age Canadians (ages 18 to 64) with disabilities. Payments began in July 2025. The maximum benefit for the July 2026–June 2027 benefit year is $204.20 per month ($2,450 per year). The benefit is income-tested based on the previous year's federal income tax return. Starting in September 2026, the government will also pay a one-time supplemental $150 lump-sum payment to CDB recipients to help offset the cost of obtaining the Disability Tax Credit (DTC); this is separate from the regular monthly amount and requires no separate application.

Disability Tax Credit

The Disability Tax Credit (DTC) is a non-refundable federal tax credit that helps individuals with severe and prolonged physical or mental impairments — or those supporting them — reduce the income tax they owe. It is not a monthly payment, but it is the gateway to other programs such as the Canada Disability Benefit, the RDSP, and the Child Disability Benefit.

Canada Pension Plan Disability Benefit

A monthly, taxable benefit for people who have contributed to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and are under 65 years old, who are unable to work regularly due to a severe and prolonged mental or physical disability. The maximum monthly amount is $1,741.20 (as of 2026).

Alberta Disability Assistance Program

ADAP is Alberta's disability income program for Albertans 18+ whose severe disability significantly impedes employment (continuously or episodically) but does not prevent it. Launched July 2026, it provides a $1,740/month core financial benefit, health and personal benefits, and higher employment-income exemptions than AISH. Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped

AISH is Alberta's longstanding disability income program for Albertans 18+ whose severe disability permanently prevents employment. As of July 2, 2026 it co-exists with the Alberta Disability Assistance Program (ADAP). AISH provides a $1,940/month standard living allowance plus health and personal benefits. It can replace up to $1,560 per year of student loan with grant money that does not need to be repaid, reducing debt for students with disabilities.

Alberta Blue Cross Non-Group Coverage

Alberta Blue Cross Non-Group Coverage is a supplementary health insurance plan available to Albertans under 65 who are not covered by employer or other government health plans. It helps pay for services not covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan, such as prescription drugs, dental, vision, and ambulance services. A Premium Subsidy Program lowers the monthly cost for lower-income households.

Residential Access Modification Program

The Residential Access Modification Program (RAMP) provides non-repayable, non-taxable grants to help lower-income Albertans with mobility challenges make permanent accessibility modifications to their homes, such as installing ramps, widening doorways, or adding accessible bathrooms. These changes help people enter and move safely within their own living space.

Grants for Students with Disabilities (Alberta Student Aid)

Alberta Student Aid offers grants for students with permanent disabilities (PD) or persistent or prolonged disabilities (PPD) to help cover the extra costs of post-secondary education and living expenses. Approved students may receive up to $2,800 per loan year in grant funding, in addition to other student aid they may qualify for.

Disability Related Employment Supports

Disability Related Employment Supports (DRES) provides funding for supports and services that help Albertans overcome disability-related barriers to employment or education. This can include assistive technology, sign language interpretation, job coaching, tutoring, and other workplace or educational supports tailored to your needs.

Alberta Income Support

Alberta Income Support provides financial help to low-income Albertans who are unemployed or underemployed and need help meeting basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter. It includes two streams: Expected to Work (ETW) for people expected to find employment, and Barriers to Full Employment (BFE) for people facing challenges that make full employment difficult.

Alberta Adult Health Benefit

The Alberta Adult Health Benefit provides free health coverage for low-income adults and their families who are not eligible for AISH or Income Support. Coverage includes prescription drugs, dental care, optical services, ambulance services, and diabetic supplies, helping people manage ongoing health needs without cost becoming a barrier.

Alberta Child Health Benefit

The Alberta Child Health Benefit provides free health coverage for children in low-income families who are not eligible for other government health benefits. It covers prescription drugs, dental care, eyeglasses, ambulance services, and diabetic supplies for children under 18 (or under 20 if still in high school and living at home).

Canadian Dental Care Plan

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program that helps cover the cost of oral health care services for eligible Canadian residents who do not have access to private dental insurance. Coverage includes a range of services such as cleanings, fillings, dentures, and other routine dental care, with costs shared based on your income.

Canada Workers Benefit – Disability Supplement

The Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) is a refundable tax credit for low-income working people. If you are approved for the Disability Tax Credit, you may also receive the CWB disability supplement — an extra amount on top of the basic CWB to help offset the additional costs of working while living with a disability.

Excise Gas RefundFederal

Federal Excise Gasoline Tax Refund for Persons with Disabilities

If you have a permanent mobility impairment that prevents you from safely using public transportation, you can claim a refund of part of the federal excise tax you paid on gasoline you buy for a vehicle. A qualified medical practitioner must certify the impairment. This refund helps offset some of the higher transportation costs faced by people with permanent mobility disabilities.

QC SolidarityProvincial

Quebec Social Solidarity Program

Quebec's financial assistance program for individuals and families living with a long-term disability that severely limits their capacity for employment. In 2026, the total benefit for a single adult is $1,318 per month ($15,816 per year), indexed annually to inflation. A couple receives $1,934 per month.

Old Age Security

Old Age Security (OAS) is a federal monthly taxable pension for Canadians aged 65 and older. It is funded by general tax revenues and is based on residency rather than work history. For the period of July to September 2026, the maximum monthly OAS pension is $751.97 for those aged 65 to 74, and $827.17 for those aged 75 and older. The benefit is subject to an income-tested recovery tax (clawback) for high-income earners.

VAC Pain and Suffering Compensation

A tax-free monthly payment from Veterans Affairs Canada for eligible veterans whose disability is related to service. Introduced in 2019 under Pension for Life, it provides monthly payments or a lump sum based on the severity of the condition. As of 2026, the 100% monthly rate is $1,419.82, while the maximum lump sum is $461,956.71. Additional Pain and Suffering Compensation (APSC) may provide up to $1,851.93 more per month for those with severe permanent impairments.

Autism Funding — British Columbia

British Columbia's direct funding program for autistic children and youth. Provides up to $22,000 per year for children under age 6, and up to $6,000 per year for those aged 6–18. Families use the funding to purchase approved services including applied behaviour analysis (ABA), speech therapy, and occupational therapy. The program is currently active and accepts new applications, though a transition to a new disability benefit model is planned for late 2027.

A tax-free monthly pension from Veterans Affairs Canada for eligible Canadian Armed Forces veterans and RCMP members whose disability is related to their service. As of 2026, the maximum monthly rate for a single pensioner at 100% disability is $3,513.48. This program is primarily for those who applied before April 1, 2006, or under specific RCMP legislation, though it continues to support thousands of veterans and their survivors.

New Brunswick's Income Assistance program includes a disability stream that provides higher monthly support rates and additional benefits for residents whose disability significantly limits their ability to work.

Medical Expense Tax Credit

A federal non-refundable tax credit for eligible medical expenses paid for yourself, your spouse, or dependants. Can significantly reduce the tax you owe.

Rogers Connected for Success

A Rogers program offering high-speed, low-cost internet, TV, and mobile plans to individuals receiving various forms of government income support. A carrier-administered complement to the federal Connecting Families initiative.

Connecting Families Initiative

A Government of Canada program that partners with Internet Service Providers to offer low-cost home internet plans to eligible low-income families and seniors. Helps bridge the digital divide for households that may otherwise be unable to afford reliable internet access.

Ontario Special Services at Home

The Special Services at Home (SSAH) program provides direct funding to families caring for a child or youth under 18 with a developmental and/or physical disability. The program is a reimbursement-based initiative designed to help families purchase supports that assist with personal growth and development, as well as respite services to provide relief for primary caregivers.

Employment Insurance Regular Benefits

Federal income replacement for Canadians who lose their job through no fault of their own (e.g., layoff, shortage of work, or end of contract). It provides 55% of average weekly insurable earnings, up to a maximum of $729 per week in 2026, for a period of 14 to 45 weeks depending on the regional unemployment rate and accumulated insurable hours.

Child Disability Benefit

The Child Disability Benefit (CDB) is a tax-free monthly payment made to families who care for a child under age 18 with a severe and prolonged impairment in physical or mental functions. It is paid as a supplement to the Canada Child Benefit (CCB). For the period of July 2026 to June 2027, the maximum benefit is $3,480 per year ($290 per month) per eligible child.

Guaranteed Income Supplement

The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) is a federal, non-taxable monthly benefit for low-income seniors aged 65 and older who receive the Old Age Security (OAS) pension. It is designed to provide additional financial support to ensure a minimum level of income. The benefit amount is income-tested and adjusted quarterly based on your marital status and previous year's income.

Manitoba Supports for Persons with Disabilities

Manitoba Supports for Persons with Disabilities (MSPD) is an income support program for Manitoba residents aged 18 or older with a severe and prolonged disability that significantly impacts daily living. Launched in January 2023, it provides financial assistance for basic needs and shelter, featuring an annual earnings exemption of $12,000 and indexed basic needs amounts. As of July 2026, recipients may choose to receive benefits in one or two payments per month. Effective September 1, 2026, provincial dental coverage for MSPD recipients is restricted to emergency dental care, as recipients are required to utilize the federal Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) for routine dental needs.

Quebec Pension Plan Disability Benefit

The Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) disability pension is a monthly payment for individuals under age 65 who have contributed to the QPP and are deemed by Retraite Québec's medical advisors to have a severe and permanent disability that prevents them from performing any type of work on a full-time basis.

NB DSPProvincial

New Brunswick Disability Support Program

The New Brunswick Disability Support Program (DSP) provides personalized, flexible supports for adults with long-term disabilities aged 19–64. The program offers one-on-one guidance to develop a custom support plan to increase independence and community participation. Services may include home support workers, respite, personal living skills training, disability-specific transportation, and assistive devices. It does not provide income support; applicants requiring financial assistance for basic needs must apply separately for the provincial Social Assistance program.

Persons with Disabilities Benefit

British Columbia's disability assistance program provides financial support, health supplements, and medical benefits to individuals who have been designated as a Person with Disabilities (PWD). To receive this assistance, you must first be designated as a PWD by the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction.

Ontario Disability Support Program

Ontario's income and employment support program for people with disabilities. It provides monthly financial assistance and health benefits. As of July 1, 2026, core rates (including basic needs and maximum shelter) increased by 1.9% to account for inflation. A single person may receive up to $1,436/month ($825 basic needs + $611 maximum shelter).

Autism and Behavioural Services — Ontario

Ontario's needs-based autism support program managed through AccessOAP. Provides annual funding to families of autistic children under 18 for Core Clinical Services, including Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, and mental health services. Funding amounts are determined by a Determination of Needs (DON) assessment, with annual envelopes ranging from $6,600 to $65,000 depending on the child's age band and assessed support level.

Home Accessibility Tax Credit

A federal non-refundable tax credit for eligible home renovation expenses that improve accessibility or help a person with a disability live more independently. You can claim up to $20,000 per year in eligible expenses (15% credit = up to $3,000 back). Available to qualifying individuals and those who claim the Disability Tax Credit.

NB Social AssistanceProvincial

New Brunswick Social Assistance (Income Support)

New Brunswick's income assistance program providing financial help to residents in financial need, including those with disabilities. Covers basic needs like food, rent, utilities, and clothing. May also help with childcare, transportation, and prescription drugs. The amount received depends on total household income relative to the rate for your family type.

Canada Caregiver Credit

A federal non-refundable tax credit for Canadians supporting a spouse, common-law partner, or dependent relative with a physical or mental impairment. For the 2026 tax year, you can claim up to $8,773 for an infirm dependent aged 18 or older, or up to $2,740 for an infirm child under 18. This credit reduces the amount of federal income tax you owe but does not result in a refund if you owe no tax.

Yukon provides financial and social support through Social Assistance (including a $250/month Yukon Supplementary Allowance) and Adult Disability Services. These programs help Yukoners with disabilities meet basic needs, access community inclusion supports, and manage daily living through home care or vocational services.

A territorial income support program for Northwest Territories residents with disabilities. As of August 2026, applicants continue to have the choice between this dedicated program and the general Income Assistance program based on which better suits their needs. Permanent Residency applicants on Humanitarian or Compassionate Grounds remain eligible under the July 2025 policy expansion.

Newfoundland Income Support Disability Component

Newfoundland and Labrador's income support program with a dedicated disability benefit stream. As of August 2026, under Phase 2 of the provincial poverty reduction plan, each eligible adult receives a standardized $561/month. Recipients with disabilities can keep their full Income Support and receive up to $600/month in combined disability benefits: the $400/month provincial NL Disability Benefit and the $200/month federal Canada Disability Benefit.

Disability Supports Deduction

The Disability Supports Deduction (Line 21500) is a federal tax deduction for individuals with impairments who pay for specific expenses to work, attend school, or conduct research. Unlike a tax credit, this deduction reduces your net income directly, potentially lowering the tax bracket you fall into.

Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability

Saskatchewan's income support program for people with significant and enduring disabilities. As of 2026, SAID has been restructured to simplify support: numerous specific benefits were consolidated into broader categories (including Household Health & Safety, Children's, Service Animal, Employment & Training, and Emergency), providing clients with more flexible access to funds. The program is needs-based and income-tested. The Canada Disability Benefit is fully exempt from SAID income calculations.
