Canada Disability Savings Grant
CDSG
A federal matching grant paid into a Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP). The government matches your contributions at 1:1, 2:1, or 3:1 depending on family income.
Useful Tips for Applying
The lifetime grant maximum is $70,000. Contribute early in the year since grants are first-come. Carry-forward rules let you claim unused grant room back to 2008.
Who May Qualify
Anyone with an RDSP who is approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC). New grants are paid on contributions made before the beneficiary turns 50.
Required Documents
DTC approval, an RDSP account opened at a participating financial institution, and a Social Insurance Number.
How to Apply
Open an RDSP at a participating bank or financial institution and make a contribution. The institution applies for the grant on your behalf when you contribute.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Assuming you must be low-income — everyone eligible gets at least 1:1, and lower income means a higher match. Missing the age 49 cutoff for new contributions.
