New Brunswick Self-Managed Support

NB Self-Managed

New Brunswick's Self-Managed Support option gives people in the Long-Term Care or Disability Support Programs more flexibility and independence by allowing them to manage their own services. You are assessed, a plan is developed with you, and you then arrange and direct your own care within an approved budget.

Useful Tips for Applying

Choose this option if you want more control over who provides your care and when. Keep clear records of how you spend the approved budget, since you are accountable for it. You can switch back to agency-managed services if self-management no longer suits you.

Required Documents

Enrollment in the Disability Support Program or Long-Term Care Program, an approved support plan, and an agreed budget for the services you will manage yourself.

How to Apply

Ask your Disability Support Program or Long-Term Care Program coordinator about the self-managed support option. You must be approved for one of those programs first, then choose to manage your own services.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

A common mistake is not realizing you must be in the Disability Support Program or Long-Term Care Program first. Another is not budgeting carefully, since you manage the approved funds yourself. People also miss that you remain responsible for arranging and overseeing your own care providers.
