PEI Severe Permanent Disability Benefit

PEI SPD Benefit

The Severe Permanent Disability Benefit can cancel your PEI provincial student loan debt if you have a severe permanent disability that prevents you from participating in post-secondary studies and the labour force for the rest of your life. It provides financial relief by forgiving loan debt for people who can no longer work or study because of their disability.

Useful Tips for Applying

Provide thorough medical documentation of both the severity and the permanence of your disability, since both are required. Confirm you were approved for the Canada Student Loans Program, which is a prerequisite. This benefit forgives your PEI provincial student loan debt; check whether the federal Severe Permanent Disability Benefit also applies to your federal loans.

Required Documents

Medical documentation of a severe permanent disability that prevents any future employment and study, proof you were approved for the Canada Student Loans Program, and your PEI student loan information.

How to Apply

Apply through PEI Student Financial Services with documentation of your severe permanent disability and confirmation you were approved for the Canada Student Loans Program. Medical documentation showing your disability prevents any future employment is required.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

A common mistake is confusing this with the disability grants for students who can still study — this benefit is for a severe permanent disability that prevents any future employment or study. Another is not providing complete medical documentation of the severity and permanence. People also miss that you must have been approved for the Canada Student Loans Program first.
