Ontario Emergency Assistance

ON Emergency Assist

Ontario's Emergency Assistance program provides short-term financial help if you are in a crisis or emergency and do not have enough money for things like food and housing. It is designed for urgent situations and is usually temporary, paid while you are applying for or between other supports.

Useful Tips for Applying

Apply as soon as the crisis happens — this is short-term help. If you may qualify for Ontario Works or ODSP, the caseworker can start that application at the same time. Tell the caseworker about any disability or health needs so they can connect you to the right ongoing supports.

Who May Qualify

You may qualify if you live in Ontario, are in a crisis or emergency (such as eviction, leaving an abusive relationship, or a sudden loss of income), do not have enough money for basic needs, and are not already receiving social assistance that covers the situation. You do not need to be a Canadian citizen to apply.

Required Documents

Government-issued ID, proof of Ontario residency, and information about your emergency situation, income, and housing costs.

How to Apply

Apply online or by phone through your local Ontario Works or social services office. Explain your emergency situation; a caseworker will assess your immediate needs.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

A common mistake is not applying because you think you must already be on social assistance — emergency assistance is for people in crisis who are not yet receiving help. Another is not asking for all the costs you face (food, housing, health). People also miss that the amount is usually capped at roughly what Ontario Works would pay.

Indigenous Disability Canada / British Columbia Aboriginal Network on Disability Society (BCANDS) is a national, Indigenous-led charitable organization providing cross-disability support and navigation services to Indigenous (First Nation, Métis, Inuit) peoples in Canada with disabilities. It delivers the National Indigenous Navigation Services to help Indigenous persons with disabilities access the Disability Tax Credit, the Canada Disability Benefit, and other federal, provincial and territorial disability benefits.

Disability Alliance Canada

National

Disability Alliance Canada is a national cross-disability non-profit that provides free one-on-one support to help people navigate federal disability programs, including the Canada Pension Plan Disability Benefit (CPP-D), the Disability Tax Credit (DTC), and the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB). They also offer educational guides, training and workshops, and help with applications, reconsiderations, and appeals.
