Newfoundland and Labrador Student Aid

NL Student Aid

Student Aid NL is Newfoundland and Labrador's integrated student financial assistance program, combining federal Canada Student Loans and Grants with provincial NL Student Loans and Grants. Students with disabilities can receive the Canada Student Grant for Students with Disabilities (up to $2,800 per year) and the Services and Equipment Grant for assistive technology, interpreters, and other supports.

Useful Tips for Applying

Submit disability verification early so your grants are ready when classes start. Keep all receipts for the Services and Equipment Grant, since you must confirm how you spent the funds and return any unused amount. Work with your school's accessibility office to identify the equipment and services that would help you most. NL also offers a provincial grant on top of federal grants, so plan your equipment needs early.

Required Documents

A completed disability verification form signed by a qualified professional, proof of enrollment in a designated post-secondary program, your StudentAidNL application, and (for the Services and Equipment Grant) receipts confirming how you spent the funds.

How to Apply

Apply online through StudentAidNL. You are automatically assessed for the disability grant when you apply if you meet the disability criteria; apply separately for the Services and Equipment Grant and provide receipts confirming you spent the funds as intended.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

A common mistake is not submitting disability verification, which means the grants are not added. Another is not providing receipts for the Services and Equipment Grant, which are required, with any unused funds returned. Students also miss that the grants do not need to be repaid, unlike loans.
