New Brunswick Orthopedic Program

NB Orthopedic

It covers specific custom-fitted braces and supports, custom-made braces, therapeutic and orthopedic footwear, custom-made shoes and insoles, and equipment modifications and repairs.

Useful Tips for Applying

Check your private insurance and other programs first, since this program covers only items not covered elsewhere. Get a prescription from your health professional before applying. If you already have equipment that needs repair or modification, ask whether that is covered too.

Required Documents

A prescription or referral from a health professional for the orthopedic item, proof that it is not covered by another agency or private insurance, and confirmation of your eligibility as a Social Development client or assisted health care recipient.

How to Apply

Apply through the New Brunswick Department of Social Development with a referral or prescription for the orthopedic item from a health professional. The item must not be covered by another agency or private insurance.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

A common mistake is not checking whether your private insurance or another agency covers the item first, since this program is a payer of last resort. Another is buying the item before approval. People also miss that modifications and repairs to existing equipment are covered, not just new items.
