Newfoundland and Labrador Disability Benefit

NLDB

The Newfoundland and Labrador Disability Benefit (NLDB) is a provincial program providing monthly financial support of up to $400 ($4,800 annually) to low-to-moderate income residents with disabilities. The benefit amount is determined by adjusted family net income, with full benefits provided to those with incomes below $29,402 and partial benefits available up to specific thresholds ($42,404 for individuals; up to $55,404 for couples where both qualify).

Useful Tips for Applying

• No application needed — just file your taxes and have a valid DTC certificate • If you don't have a DTC yet, apply for it through CRA first — this unlocks both the NLDB and the federal Canada Disability Benefit • The NLDB stacks on top of the federal Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) — you can receive both • The planned $1,200/year RDSP provincial contribution is for ages 18–49 with income below $42,404 — watch for implementation details • Free DTC navigation support available through Independent Living Nova Scotia or Plan Institute (serves all of Atlantic Canada)

Who May Qualify

• Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador on the first day of the payment month. • Individuals aged 18–64. • Holders of a valid federal Disability Tax Credit (DTC) certificate. • Individuals with an adjusted family net income below $42,404 (or up to $55,404 for couples where both partners qualify for the DTC).

Required Documents

• Valid federal Disability Tax Credit (DTC) certificate. • Annual income tax and benefit return filed with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

How to Apply

1. Ensure you have a valid Disability Tax Credit (DTC) certificate on file with the CRA. 2. File your annual income tax and benefit return as a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador. 3. No separate application is required; the CRA automatically determines eligibility based on tax filings and DTC status.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Not having a DTC — you must have a valid DTC certificate before you can receive the NLDB • Not filing taxes — the benefit is issued through your tax filing, so you must file every year • Assuming this replaces the federal Canada Disability Benefit — they are separate and both can be received • Not knowing about free DTC help available through ILNS or Plan Institute
