Alberta Adult Health Benefit
AB Adult Health
The Alberta Adult Health Benefit provides free health coverage for low-income adults and their families who are not eligible for AISH or Income Support. Coverage includes prescription drugs, dental care, optical services, ambulance services, and diabetic supplies, helping people manage ongoing health needs without cost becoming a barrier.
Useful Tips for Applying
If you have high ongoing prescription drug needs or are pregnant, mention this — it is one of the key qualifying situations. Children in your household may be covered through the related Alberta Child Health Benefit. Apply again if your income drops below the threshold during the year.
Who May Qualify
You and your family may qualify if you live in Alberta, are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, have an income below the program's guidelines, are not receiving health benefits through AISH or Income Support, and are either pregnant or have high ongoing prescription drug needs.
Required Documents
Proof of Alberta residency, Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status, and your previous year's income information (notice of assessment or other proof of income).
How to Apply
Apply online through the Alberta government, by mail, or in person at an Alberta Supports Centre. You will need to provide income information so the program can confirm you meet the income guidelines.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
A common mistake is assuming you must be on social assistance to qualify — this program is for people who are not on AISH or Income Support. Another is not reapplying if your income drops later. People also miss that family members may be covered under the same application.
