Alberta Blue Cross Non-Group Coverage is a supplementary health insurance plan available to Albertans under 65 who are not covered by employer or other government health plans. It helps pay for services not covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan, such as prescription drugs, dental, vision, and ambulance services. A Premium Subsidy Program lowers the monthly cost for lower-income households.
Useful Tips for Applying
If premiums are a concern, apply for the Premium Subsidy Program at the same time you enroll — it can substantially reduce your monthly cost based on income. You can also apply retroactively for previous years. Coverage is secondary to any government program benefits you receive.
Who May Qualify
You may qualify if you are an Alberta resident under 65, are not covered by an employer or other government health plan, and want supplementary coverage. The Premium Subsidy is available to lower-income enrolled members who meet the income guidelines.
Required Documents
Alberta residency confirmation and your Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan card. For the Premium Subsidy, you will need your previous year's income information.
How to Apply
Enroll directly through Alberta Blue Cross (which administers the plan for the Alberta government). If you need help with the premium, complete the Application for Alberta Blue Cross Non-Group Coverage Premium Subsidy and submit it as directed on the form.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
A common mistake is not applying for the premium subsidy and paying the full premium when you could pay less. Another is assuming you cannot join because you have a pre-existing condition — Non-Group Coverage is available regardless of health status. People also forget to reapply for the subsidy each benefit year.
