Newfoundland and Labrador Income Supplement

The Newfoundland and Labrador Income Supplement (NLIS) is a tax-free payment to low-income individuals, seniors, families, and people with disabilities. It helps reduce the impact of provincial tax measures and is paid quarterly, including a component for each child under 19.

Last reviewed: September 2026

Useful Tips for Applying

File your taxes every year to receive this automatically. If you qualify for the Disability Tax Credit, you may receive an additional disability amount within the supplement. The online calculator can help you estimate your payment before the quarterly installments arrive.

Required Documents

Your filed annual income tax return. No separate application is needed.

How to Apply

There is no separate application. You must file your annual income tax return; the benefit is calculated and paid automatically based on your family net income from the previous year.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

A common mistake is not filing your tax return, which is required. Another is not knowing the supplement includes a per-child amount for families. People also miss that people with disabilities may receive an additional component (the NL disability amount) within the supplement.
