Newfoundland and Labrador Seniors' Benefit

NL Seniors' Benefit

The Newfoundland and Labrador Seniors' Benefit is a refundable tax credit for low-income seniors. It is paid in quarterly installments in January, April, July, and October, with the maximum benefit going to seniors with the lowest family net income.

Last reviewed: September 2026

Useful Tips for Applying

File your taxes every year, since the benefit is paid automatically based on your return. Single seniors and couples with family net income up to about $30,409 can receive the maximum of about $1,882 per year. The benefit is paid quarterly, so plan your budget around the installments.

Who May Qualify

You may qualify if you are a Newfoundland and Labrador resident, are 64 or older by December 31 of the tax year, and your family net income is within the program's limits (maximum benefit for income up to about $30,409).

Required Documents

Your filed annual income tax return. No separate application is needed.

How to Apply

There is no separate application. You must file your annual income tax return; the CRA calculates and pays the benefit automatically based on your family net income from the previous year.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

A common mistake is not filing your tax return, which is required since the benefit is paid automatically from your return. Another is not realizing you must be 64 or older by December 31 of the tax year. People also miss that both single seniors and couples can qualify.
