Quebec Tax Credit for Caregivers (18 and Over)

QC Caregiver Credit 18+

Quebec's Tax Credit for Caregivers (for a care receiver 18 and over) is a refundable tax credit for people who provide care to a person 18 or older who has a severe and prolonged impairment in mental or physical functions and needs help with a basic activity of daily living. It recognizes and helps offset the cost of unpaid caregiving.

Last reviewed: September 2026

Useful Tips for Applying

Get a medical certificate confirming the care receiver's severe and prolonged impairment before claiming. Coordinate with family so only one person claims the credit for a given care receiver. The credit is refundable, so you receive it even if you owe no tax. A similar credit exists for caregivers of people 70 and over without an impairment.

Required Documents

Your Quebec income tax return with Schedule H, documentation that the care receiver has a severe and prolonged impairment (medical certificate), and proof you provided care without remuneration.

How to Apply

Claim the credit on your Quebec income tax return (Schedule H). You must not have received remuneration for the care you provided, and only one person can claim the credit for a given care receiver.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

A common mistake is claiming the credit when you were paid for the care, which disqualifies you. Another is more than one family member claiming for the same care receiver; only one person can. People also miss that the care receiver must need help with a basic activity of daily living, not just general support.
