NWT IA Disability
A territorial income support program for Northwest Territories residents with disabilities. As of August 2026, applicants continue to have the choice between this dedicated program and the general Income Assistance program based on which better suits their needs. Permanent Residency applicants on Humanitarian or Compassionate Grounds remain eligible under the July 2025 policy expansion.
• Since July 2025, you can choose between the general Income Assistance program and this dedicated program — ask about both options to see which is better for your situation • A caseworker can help you decide which program is best suited to your needs • Supplementary health benefits may be available in addition to financial assistance • If your situation changes, notify your caseworker promptly
You may qualify if: • You are a resident of the Northwest Territories • You are 18 years of age or older • You have a disability that affects your ability to meet your basic needs • You meet the financial eligibility criteria (income and asset limits apply) • Permanent Residency applicants on Humanitarian or Compassionate Grounds are also eligible
• Proof of NWT residency • Government-issued photo ID • Medical documentation confirming your disability • Financial information (income, assets, bank statements) • SIN card
1. Contact the Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) in the NWT 2. Visit your local Income Assistance office or apply by phone 3. Complete the application forms and have a healthcare provider document your disability 4. Submit all required documents to your caseworker 5. A decision will typically be made within a few weeks
