New Brunswick Transitional Assistance Program

NB Transitional Assist

New Brunswick's Transitional Assistance Program provides short-term financial assistance to people who have some training and employment potential, as well as people with long-term health needs who are not eligible for the Extended Benefits Program. It sits within the province's Social Assistance Program and supports people along the path to employment.

Conseils utiles pour la demande

If you have a long-term disability, ask about an assessment for the Extended Benefits Program, which may provide a higher rate. Report any income changes promptly. If you were working recently and might qualify for Employment Insurance, check that first, since EI can affect eligibility.

Qui peut être admissible

You may qualify if you are at least 19 (or 18 if disabled and eligible for the Extended Benefits Program), a New Brunswick resident not living in a First Nation community, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and your household income is below the rate for your family type. The program is for people with some employment potential and some people with long-term health needs.

Documents requis

Proof of New Brunswick residency, government-issued ID, proof of household income and assets, and information about your housing costs and family situation.

Comment présenter une demande

Apply through the New Brunswick Department of Social Development. All household income is added up; if it is below the rate for your family type, your household is likely eligible, with the amount depending on your total household income.

Erreurs courantes à éviter

A common mistake is not reporting all household income, which affects the amount and can cause overpayments. Another is not knowing that if you are assessed as blind, deaf, or disabled, the Extended Benefits Program may apply instead. People also miss that you may be referred to employment supports at the same time.
