Old Age Security
OAS
Old Age Security (OAS) is a federal monthly taxable pension for Canadians aged 65 and older. It is funded by general tax revenues and is based on residency rather than work history. For the period of July to September 2026, the maximum monthly OAS pension is $751.97 for those aged 65 to 74, and $827.17 for those aged 75 and older. The benefit is subject to an income-tested recovery tax (clawback) for high-income earners.
Conseils utiles pour la demande
• Delaying OAS to age 70 increases your monthly payment by 36% — worthwhile if you are in good health • OAS is indexed to inflation quarterly — it increases automatically • Turning 75 gives you an automatic 10% increase in your OAS payment • OAS plus GIS gives low-income seniors a monthly base of ~$1,800–$2,200
Qui peut être admissible
• You are 65 years of age or older. • If living in Canada: You are a Canadian citizen or legal resident at the time of approval and have resided in Canada for at least 10 years since age 18. • If living outside Canada: You were a Canadian citizen or legal resident on the day before you left Canada and have resided in Canada for at least 20 years since age 18.
Documents requis
• Proof of employment from the employer (if applicable). • Proof of physically returning to Canada (if applicable). • Additional documentation may be requested by Service Canada to verify identity, age, and residency status.
Comment présenter une demande
1. Service Canada will attempt to automatically enroll you; you will be notified by mail if this occurs. 2. If you do not receive an enrollment letter by the month after your 64th birthday, apply online via your My Service Canada Account or submit a paper application. 3. You may choose to delay your pension start date up to age 70 to receive a higher monthly amount (0.6% increase per month delayed).
Erreurs courantes à éviter
• Not applying early — the process takes time and payments are not retroactive beyond 11 months • Not knowing about the 75+ enhancement — call Service Canada after your 75th birthday to confirm • Assuming OAS is only for the very poor — most Canadians qualify regardless of income • Not understanding the OAS clawback — only applies if your income exceeds ~$90,997/year
