Caregiver Tax Credits (Canada)
Caregiver Credits
A comprehensive suite of federal tax credits including the Canada Caregiver Credit, the Eligible Dependant Amount, and the Infirm Dependant Credit. These are designed to provide financial relief to those maintaining a home for and supporting individuals with physical or mental disabilities.
Conseils utiles pour la demande
• If your dependent is eligible for the DTC, ensure that is approved first to maximize the transfer of unused credits • You can retroactively claim caregiver credits for up to 10 years by filing form T1-ADJ • These credits can often be combined with provincial caregiver credits (e.g., in Ontario or BC)
Qui peut être admissible
You may qualify if you: • Support an infirm spouse, common-law partner, or child • Support a relative (parent, sibling, etc.) who is dependent on you due to impairment • Have an impairment certified by a medical practitioner • Have the dependent's income fall within the eligibility ranges for the specific credit year
Documents requis
• T2201 Disability Tax Credit certificate (highly recommended for smoother approval) • Completed Schedule 5 for the T1 tax return • Receipts for medical and care-related expenses if also claiming the METC • Documentation of the relationship and proof of support
Comment présenter une demande
1. Determine which specific lines (30300, 30400, 30425, 30450, or 30500) apply to your situation 2. Complete Schedule 5 of your annual tax return to calculate the total caregiver amount 3. Enter the final calculated values on your T1 tax return 4. Keep all supporting medical documents for at least six years
Erreurs courantes à éviter
• Assuming you can only claim for someone living in your home • Missing out on claiming for adult children or siblings who are dependent due to impairment • Not accounting for the reduction in credit amount based on the dependent's net income

For the 2026 tax year, you can claim up to $8,773 for an infirm dependent aged 18 or older, or up to $2,740 for an infirm child under 18. This credit reduces the amount of federal income tax you owe but does not result in a refund if you owe no tax.

If you have a permanent mobility impairment that prevents you from safely using public transportation, you can claim a refund of part of the federal excise tax you paid on gasoline you buy for a vehicle. A qualified medical practitioner must certify the impairment. This refund helps offset some of the higher transportation costs faced by people with permanent mobility disabilities.

Voir les détailsFind A Doctor Canada
Find A Doctor Canada is a free, independent online search tool for exploring family-doctor, walk-in clinic and other primary-care options across Canada. Searching for a family doctor can add another burden for people already managing a disability or supporting a loved one — this tool lets users search by location and care type, review reported availability and source notes, and contact clinics directly. It is a navigation tool, not a clinic or medical service; current intake, eligibility and accessibility arrangements must be confirmed with each provider, and acceptance is not guaranteed.
